Sustainable Facilities
& Infrastructure Lab

Myers-Lawson School of Construction • Virginia Tech

The people who get the real work done at the SFI Lab are our students - the graduate and undergraduate researchers who work on solving important problems for the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industries. Here are our current students - click to visit their individual pages.

Kenneth Sands is a Ph.D. candidate who is working in the area of construction ethics education. Specifically, he is working to understand how different approaches to pedagogy influence the ethical efficacy of undergraduate construction students. He is presently a teaching assistant with the Department of Building Construction. Kenneth’s advisor is Dr. Annie Pearce.

Min Jae Suh is a doctoral student who joined the SFI Lab in Fall 2011 as a Myers-Lawson School of Construction Doctoral Fellow. Min Jae’s research involves understanding how green building certification affects market value of not only the certified buildings, but also the buildings in the surrounding neighborhoods, cities, and regions. By understanding this relationship, he hopes to be able to influence green building policy to incentivize certification in ways that maximize the economic sustainability of cities. Min Jae’s advisor is Dr. Annie Pearce.

Ph.D. Candidate Sandeep Langar receives 2012 CAUS Outstanding Doctoral Student Award

Sandeep Langar, a doctoral candidate from Mumbai, India, was recently selected the 2012 Outstanding Doctoral Student from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. Sandeep, who finished his M.S. degree in Building Construction Science and Management from Virginia Tech in 2008, studies innovation in the architecture/engineering/construction domain with a focus on sustainability innovations in the design process. He is a past president of the Virginia Tech Indian Student Association and has served as a graduate research and teaching assistant for a variety of projects and classes in Building Construction.

Recently, Sandeep relocated to Lafayette, LA to undertake an internship with Manuel Builders, a 48 year old custom homebuilder seeking to rework its design and project delivery processes using Building Information Modeling (BIM). Sandeep is working closely with the firm to roll out its BIM programs while he finishes his dissertation. In his doctoral research, he is focusing on the role of BIM in enhancing the adoption of sustainability-related innovations during the design process. Sandeep is expected to graduate in 2012, after which he hopes to pursue a career in industry or academia.
